Challenge
The client, a leading provider of hardware-based mobile computing devices (e.g., handheld scanners, industrial tablets), sought to pivot from a hardware-centric business model to an integrated solutions provider, blending hardware with software capabilities. To succeed in this transition, the client needed to understand the competitive landscape, emerging technologies, and partnership/acquisition opportunities that could support this strategic shift.
Approach
Working directly with the marketing strategy team, we mapped the solution space, focusing on key growth themes such as connected workforce platforms, computer vision, infrared tech, artificial intelligence (AI), and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs). We analyzed industry trends, benchmarked leading competitors, and identified high-potential tech companies for partnership or acquisition.
A detailed assessment was conducted on build vs. partner vs. acquire options. For each route, we evaluated potential investments, integration challenges, strategic fit, and associated risks. The analysis included due diligence on multiple target companies, aligned to the client's vision for expanding its software and digital solution capabilities.
Results
Our work culminated in a strategic roadmap guiding the client’s digital pivot, with actionable recommendations on capability development and inorganic growth. The client proceeded to acquire one of the shortlisted companies—enhancing its ability to offer integrated, software-led solutions across key verticals such as manufacturing and logistics.
